Based on fieldwork in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, Dr Joshua Esler’s recent book examines the adaptation of Tibetan Buddhism to Chinese societies among Han Chinese practitioners in these locations, and the way in which the Tibetan tradition is influencing change there.
About the author:
Dr Joshua Esler is a lecturer in Asian Studies and History at Sheridan Institute of Higher Education. His research is focused on Sino-Tibetan relations through the medium of Buddhism - specifically Tibetan Buddhism. His related research interests include: the sociology and anthropology of religion; Chinese religions and philosophy; Chinese and Tibetan religious history; the state and religion in China; and religion and social change in contemporary China. Dr Esler speaks Mandarin Chinese, Cantonese and Hebrew, and is currently learning Tibetan and Sanskrit through the Australia National University (ANU).
